Nov 9, 2015 - Public Hearing re: Gas and Oil Well Production Zoning Ordinance

Council met at 6:oo pm in the Beulah Presbyterian Church Community Room to hear local residents' opinions on Churchill's Chapter 304 Zoning Code Section 304-37 ("Gas and Oil Well Production"). At issue was to designate Gas and Oil Well Production in commercial zone 1 only.

Section 304-37 was written before the state mandated that all municipalities must allow gas and oil production. The amendment gives local property owners the ability to restrict where this activity can occur so that it will minimize impact. At the subsequent meeting at 7:30, Council approved the zoning change with 6 in favor and 1 abstaining.

Churchill Democratic Committee

Position Statement on Fracking

Churchill is a small, densely populated, mostly residential borough unsuitable for fracking. The Churchill Democratic Committee is opposed to the commercial extraction of or the exploration for natural gas within our community, as they threaten the health, safety, welfare and property values of current and future residents. Fracking activity may irreparably damage our natural water and soil resources, our ground stability and our air quality. We believe our federal and state governments should be promoting renewable sources of energy through tax credits or other incentives.
